Pit case - Reviewing one option
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
One of the most frustrating items to purchase is the Pit case a slot car person uses for his cars, accessories, and tools. The problem is two fold. First, you buy what you think you want at the store, and after you get home and fill it up, it isn't right. And second, "Why isn't it right?" Because the things ends up being either so small that you end up giving it to the wife for an etui, or so large that you have to be built like a stevedore to get it to the bench. We may have found, to paraphrase Goldilocks, the one that's "just right".

That little number is the Flambeau (800-232-3474) Kwickdraw (#7040). We searched a lot of places for this, and ended up finding it in a Sport Mart. Perhaps other sporting goods stores is where you might look if you can't find it in the usual places.

We looked at their 8020, and 8040 models, but they were too darned big, unless you enjoy hauling around a bus load of stuff for each event. The nice thing about the 7040 was that it was able to contain the three smaller boxes I was using into one.

The unit came with six trays. Two small ones that slide into the top of the lid, a medium one that fit under the lid in the large compartment, and three slide out trays, with adjustable dividers, that come out the front when the door is dropped down. It also had two tool racks on each side of the top for holding the tools that you are using, so you don't have to scatter them around the table, or replace them in the box till you finish.

If there was a negative to this unit, we aren't aware of it yet. The fact that all snaps, locks and hinges are made of plastic may mean that this is a short lived item. The fit and alignment wasn't the greatest, either. The trays do slide in and out easily, though.

All in all, for the $23.95 we paid for this one, it was a steal. Prices may very in your area.
